The Downtown Falcons sports ministry is the cornerstone of Downtown Ministries. There’s almost always a sport in season. Our teams are coached by volunteers and compete in leagues with other youth squads in Athens and Northeast Georgia.
The Downtown Falcons field football teams for four different age groups: ages 4-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. Our teams practice three times a week, starting in July. The season begins in August and runs through early November. The Falcons play in the Northeast Georgia Youth Football Conference, an 8-team league that draws from Athens and surrounding communities. Home games and practices are held at Bishop Park.
Since 2005, the Downtown Falcons have taken to the basketball court during the winter. The Falcons field both girls’ and boys’ teams for 3rd and 4th graders and 5th and 6th graders. Teams begin practicing twice a week in December. The season begins in January and ends in March. The Downtown Falcons play their games in leagues hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of Athens and the First United Methodist Church in downtown Athens.
In a tradition as old as the Downtown Falcons football program, every Falcons team has its own cheerleading squad. Girls aged 4-to-12 can participate. The squads practice twice a week at Bishop Park during the same schedule blocks as the football teams. In addition to cheering, the squads also serve as a support group and pep club for the teams.
While the Downtown Falcons play for a higher purpose, our teams also play to win. No matter the sport, the Downtown Falcons have created a legacy of excellence. The Downtown Falcons 4- to 6-year-old football team won both the league championship and the Georgia Youth Superconference Championship in 2010. In basketball, the 5th and 6th grade boys Falcons team captured the 2009 Athens Premier League Championship. The Falcons will continue to pursue a winning tradition, on and off the field, in every season.
